You eat clean. You move your body. You take your supplements. You've read the labels, switched the products, done the work. And yet, there's still the fatigue that won't lift. The bloating that comes out of nowhere. The brain fog at 3pm. The hormonal chaos your doctor keeps calling "normal for your age." And honestly? Nobody has ever asked you about your water.
Quick Win: Do This Right Now (Before You Read Any Further)
Grab a pen. Or open your notes app. As you read each toxin below, put a checkmark next to every symptom you've been living with, even the ones you've already accepted as "just how you feel."
By the time you reach the bottom of this page, you'll have a symptom score. That number is going to be uncomfortable. Good. That's the point.
Toxin #1 Chlorine
It's in almost every municipal water supply. It's there to kill bacteria, and it does that job. But here's what it also does, it doesn't stop killing once it's inside you.
What it's doing biologically: Chlorine disrupts the gut microbiome by killing the beneficial bacteria that live there, the same bacteria responsible for digesting your food, producing serotonin, and regulating inflammation. Long-term exposure is linked to gut permeability, the condition some call "leaky gut" where the intestinal lining becomes porous enough to let partially digested food and toxins pass directly into the bloodstream.
Check the symptoms you recognize:
- ☐ Bloating or gas that seems random and persistent
- ☐ Skin issues: eczema, redness, unexplained breakouts
- ☐ Digestive irregularity (constipation, IBS-type symptoms)
- ☐ Heightened sensitivity or reactions to foods you used to tolerate
- ☐ Low-grade inflammation that doesn't have a clear cause
Toxin #2 Microplastics
A 2024 study found microplastics in human blood, breast milk, lung tissue, and most recently, in arterial plaques linked to heart attack and stroke. These aren't traces. They're accumulating. It has been estimated we are eating the equivalent of a plastic credit card every 7 to 10 days, and that people with Dementia had 10X more microplastics in their brain.
What it's doing biologically: Microplastics act as endocrine disruptors. They mimic estrogen in the body, binding to hormone receptors and sending false signals that throw off the entire hormonal communication system. They also carry heavy metals and chemical additives that hitch a ride into your cells.
Check the symptoms you recognize:
- ☐ Hormonal irregularities: cycle changes, mood swings, PMS that's gotten worse
- ☐ Unexplained weight gain, especially around the midsection
- ☐ Fertility challenges or worsening menopausal symptoms
- ☐ Fatigue that doesn't respond to rest
- ☐ Thyroid irregularities or slow metabolism
Toxin #3 Lead
Lead pipes were standard in homes built before 1986 across Europe and North America. They're still there. In your walls. Carrying your water from the main line to your tap right now.
What it's doing biologically: Lead is a neurotoxin with no safe level of exposure. It competes with calcium and zinc in the body, disrupting bone density, neurological function, and immune response. In children, the impact on cognitive development is well-documented. In adults, especially women, it accumulates silently in bone tissue for decades and is released during menopause when bone mineral turnover increases.
Check the symptoms you recognize:
- ☐ Persistent brain fog or difficulty concentrating
- ☐ Memory issues that feel premature for your age
- ☐ Mood instability: irritability, anxiety, low-grade depression
- ☐ Joint or bone pain without clear structural cause
- ☐ Frequent headaches, especially tension-type
- ☐ Children in your household with behavioral, attention, or developmental concerns
None of this is normal. It's normalized. There's a difference — and that difference is the most important thing on this page.
Toxin #4 Fluoride
What it's doing biologically: Fluoride accumulates in the pineal gland, the brain structure responsible for producing melatonin and regulating circadian rhythm. It also competes with iodine in thyroid receptor sites, meaning it can suppress thyroid function even in people who test "within normal range." Low-level thyroid disruption is one of the most underdiagnosed drivers of chronic fatigue in women.
Check the symptoms you recognize:
- ☐ Sleep that doesn't feel restorative you wake up tired
- ☐ Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
- ☐ Sluggish thyroid symptoms fatigue, cold sensitivity, dry skin, hair loss
- ☐ Cognitive slowness feeling like you're "thinking through cotton"
- ☐ Calcification or joint stiffness, especially in the morning
Toxin #5 Chloramines
Chloramines are what many water treatment facilities now use instead of chlorine, a combination of chlorine and ammonia. They're harder to remove than chlorine, they don't evaporate when you boil water or let it sit, and standard carbon filters don't catch them effectively.
What it's doing biologically: Chloramines are significantly more aggressive to the respiratory mucosa and gut lining than chlorine alone. They're also associated with the formation of nitrosamines, a class of compounds classified as probable human carcinogens, during water treatment. Most women who filter their water at home have no idea their filter isn't removing chloramines at all.
Check the symptoms you recognize:
- ☐ Chronic low-grade respiratory irritation or congestion
- ☐ Gut inflammation that doesn't respond to dietary changes
- ☐ Skin that feels reactive even after switching personal care products
- ☐ Persistent fatigue with no clear diagnosis
- ☐ A general sense that "something is off" that you can't explain
- 240+
- microplastic particles consumed per person daily via water
- 10 million+
- homes in Europe still connected to lead service lines
- 90%
- of standard filters don't remove chloramines
- 3×
- higher estrogen-disruption markers in women with high microplastic exposure
Your Symptom Score
Count your checkmarks
Go back through all five toxin sections and total every symptom you checked. Be honest — include the ones you've already accepted as normal.
Find your number
0–3 checked: Minimal visible impact — but invisible accumulation is still happening. 4–7 checked: Moderate chronic load. Your body is compensating, but you're feeling it. 8+ checked: High chronic toxic load. These symptoms aren't random. They have a source.
Sit with this for a moment
You didn't develop these symptoms because you weren't trying hard enough. You developed them because no one ever connected these dots for you. Now you have the connection. What you do with it is up to you.
Why this is only the start
This checklist shows you the problem. Clearly, specifically, without softening it. But identifying five toxins and checking symptoms isn't a solution, it's a starting point.
The question underneath all of this isn't just what's in the water. It's: what do you actually do about it? What does a real, permanent, daily solution look like, one that doesn't mean hauling plastic bottles, replacing filters on a schedule you'll forget, or spending €150 a month on water that may be just as contaminated?
When I started asking that question for myself and for my family, I didn't find the answer in a filter. I found it in something that changed not just what was removed from the water, but what the water became, structurally, electrically, biologically.
That's what I use at home. Every day. It's what I give my son. And it's the thing I'm most asked about by the women in my community who, like you, had already tried everything else.
If you checked more than 3 symptoms and you want to know what I changed, write me on WhatsApp. Tell me your score. We'll talk about it like two women who take this seriously, not like a sales call.
